Guangzhou: West Africa's factory floor

Guangzhou has been trading with the world for centuries, and for the last few decades it has been the first Chinese city most West African importers ever see. The Canton Fair fills its exhibition halls twice a year with buyers from Lagos, Onitsha, Accra and Kumasi; its wholesale districts sell garments, electronics, hardware and everything between; and behind the city stretches the Pearl River Delta, the densest manufacturing region on earth.

The relationship problem

Most West African import losses on this lane share one anatomy: a relationship that felt verified but wasn't. A fair booth, a showroom, a WeChat history and a first successful small order: none of which proves that the "factory" is not a trading company, that capacity exists for the big order, or that quality survives when volume triples. The gap between felt trust and proven fact is precisely where deposits disappear.

If you can't fly in

Plenty of West African buyers source Guangzhou without ever visiting it, and the Sourcing Desk exists for exactly that. Submit a brief with your category, specification, target price and quantity; receive three to five candidates, each verified to at least Tier A, with indicative quotes and a comparison matrix. The fair is a fine way to find suppliers; it has never been a way to verify them. Separating those two jobs is how buying from seven thousand kilometres away stops being a leap.
