Kano: the north's thousand-year trading capital

Kano was a trading city before Lagos existed as more than a fishing settlement. The terminus of trans-Saharan caravan routes for a millennium, its walled old city still wraps around Kurmi Market (founded in the fifteenth century and trading continuously since), while modern Kano runs the north's largest commercial economy from the textile floors of Kantin Kwari to industrial estates and grain depots that feed half the Sahel.

The north's own trade logic

Kano commerce differs from the coastal hubs in ways that matter to protection. Distances are longer: a container from Guangzhou lands at Apapa and still has a thousand kilometres of road ahead of it, so the inland leg is not an afterthought but the deal's second act, quoted explicitly, tracked by milestone, delivered against an OTP with a geotagged photo. Trade relationships run older and deeper: Kantin Kwari's textile dynasties and Kurmi's commodity houses transact on generational reputation, which the Trade Passport formalises rather than replaces, converting standing that locals already honour into evidence that a distant counterparty can check.
