Accra–Tema: Ghana's capital and its port, one trading system

Greater Accra runs on a twenty-kilometre axis with a port at one end and a capital city at the other. Tema, purpose-built in the independence era and massively expanded since, is Ghana's main container gateway and one of the most capable terminals on the Gulf of Guinea. Accra is where the country buys, sells and decides. Between them stretch the industrial estates, bonded warehouses and forwarders' yards that turn vessel calls into commerce.

Import country

For importers, the Accra–Tema corridor is Ghana's front door. Consumer goods, electronics, textiles and machinery arrive from Guangzhou, Yiwu and beyond, clear at Tema, and disperse: much of it through Makola Market and the wholesale streets of central Accra, the rest north to Kumasi and the interior. Export country

The same corridor works in reverse for Ghana's exporters. Shea, cashew, cocoa products, garments and manufactured goods consolidate here for Europe, the UK and (under China's zero-tariff regime for African goods) a rapidly opening eastern lane. What overseas buyers lack is proof, and proof is a local product: Tier B verification at the exporter's premises, pre-shipment inspection against the buyer's declared specification, and supervised stuffing at Tema with seal numbers on record. Staged escrow releases mean the exporter is paid as evidence lands, not ninety days after the vessel sails.

Vehicles through Tema

Tema also handles Ghana's vehicle imports, including RoRo sailings from the UK and Europe, a lane where the gap between the advertised car and the delivered car has traditionally been discovered too late, on the quay, with duty already owed.
